Pathfinder to the hydrogen age: acatech and DECHEMA present H2-Compass
The digital H2-Compass shows data- and fact-based options for action on hydrogen production, transport, imports and usage. One conclusion: Even with hydrogen, Germany will remain an energy importer - but the shift away from oil and gas will enable an important reduction in critical dependencies.

Press release: Hydrogen ramp-up
Stefan Wenzel, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), and Till Mansmann, Innovation Commissioner for Green Hydrogen at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), advocate a rapid hydrogen ramp-up at the three-day Hydrogen Dialogue conference.

Press release: Hydrogen for international shipping
In order to reduce the climate impact of international shipping, research projects worldwide are testing hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and other energy carriers as alternative fuels for ships. In its new analysis, the H2-Compass shows that none of these alternative energy carriers have yet become established and that coexistence is likely.

Press release: Meta-analysis on hydrogen in transport sector
18 August 2022: The National Academy of Science and Engineering, acatech, and the Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, DECHEMA, publish an analysis on the use of hydrogen in the domestic transport sector.

Press release: Results of stakeholder dialogue
acatech and DECHEMA publish the summary of their one-year dialogue process in which representatives from industry, science, NGOs and public administration discussed their views on the market ramp-up of the hydrogen economy.

Press release: Meta-analysis on the transformation of the chemical industry
acatech and DECHEMA present a meta-analysis on the transformation of the chemical industry. It shows that the defossilisation of the industry depends on the use of hydrogen for energy and raw materials.

Press release: National hydrogen strategies in comparison
Many countries are betting on the development of their own national hydrogen economy. H2-Compass compared 22 national hydrogen strategies, including those from China, Japan, the USA, Russia, Australia, Chile and Morocco. Germany would be well advised to establish early relations with countries aiming to export green hydrogen.

Ensuring a successful hydrogen ramp-up
The H2-Compass team presents the results of the survey 'Hydrogen Economy 2030/2050: Goals and Paths': Which opportunities will be presented by the development of a German hydrogen economy, which obstacles must be eliminated, and when? Where is research still needed? How important do survey respondents consider different hydrogen production paths and where should hydrogen be produced?

International hydrogen strategies in comparison
As part of the H2-Compass project, we have updated our country analysis - a comparison of national hydrogen strategies. The strategies of 21 additional countries and regions were taken into account for the update. The analysis now covers a total of 43 strategies. We present our analysis and show, among other things, which countries aim to position themselves as export nations.

Improving the steel industry’s carbon footprint with hydrogen
The resource intensive steel industry plays an important role for Germany as an industrial location and its decarbonisation is as challenging as it is essential. How can hydrogen contribute to this? How much is needed for decarbonisation? Are there alternatives to the use of hydrogen and how can it work as efficiently as possible? Answers to these and other questions can be found in our factsheet on steel.

What role for hydrogen in the future of home heating?
How can hydrogen be used to contribute to the future of building heating? What are the alternatives? Where do controversies arise? Can hydrogen make any contribution at all? Read our building heating factsheet for the answers.

International shipping: Climate-neutral propulsion systems and fuels
H2-Compass has analysed international developments and research results on climate neutral propulsion systems and fuels for international shipping. The results are presented in the document available here. Since the future course of technological developments is presently highly uncertain, we also discussed the results with experts from shipping companies, ports, associations and academia. The discussion is summarised in nine theses at the end of the report.

Use of hydrogen in transport
What role will hydrogen play on Germany's roads and rails in the future? How can hydrogen help the transport sector reach net-zero? The results from our meta-analysis provide the answers.

Import and transport options
A working group of the ‘Energy Systems of the Future’ (ESYS) academy project, a joint initiative of acatech, Leopoldina and the Union of the German Academies, has analysed options for importing and transporting hydrogen. Advantages and disadvantages are considered as well as, for example, obstacles to establishing trade relations.

Electrolysis capacities
The H2-Compass project maintains a database of hydrogen production projects in Germany. For the first time, we are publishing the current status of announced electrolysis capacities up to 2030. Projects with a stated start date will require a cumulative electric power of 4.3 GW, which corresponds to just under 50% of the target agreed upon in the German Coalition agreement (10 GW).

Raw material needs
Many of the key raw materials needed for the production of electrolysers come from Russia. H2-Compass has therefore investigated what effects Russia’s war on Ukraine may have on Germany’s electrolyser production. We present the results of our analysis here.
